- Zack Snyder's 'Justice League' will be coming to HBO Max in 2021.
DC fans are rejoicing everywhere. HBO Max will be releasing Zack Snyder’s director cut of the 2017 Justice League movie.
The hashtag #ReleaseTheSnyderCut became extremely popular within the fandom and widely rumored about. Fans began pushing for Snyder’s cut since the announcement of HBO Max last year.
Snyder and his wife Deborah who served as a producer stepped away from the movie due to the suicide of their 20-year-old daughter, Autumn. Marvel’s Joss Whedon, who successfully helmed The Avengers, was brought on to complete the film. Whedon shot many new scenes which resulted in heavy criticism.
Snyder told The Hollywood Reporter, “You probably saw one-fourth of what I did,” and has not seen the theatrical release.
Warner Bros. paid a reported $20 to $30 million for Snyder to complete and release the originally planned film. Although not decided yet, it will be an extended version that will either be four hours long or broken up into six “chapters.”
#ReleaseTheSnyderCut became the most tweeted hashtag for a WB movie on the second anniversary of its release, and actors Ben Affleck (Batman) and Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) also began sharing it. Some believe the cut didn’t exist while other fans pushed for it.
WB chairman Toby Emmerich set the plan in motion by calling the Snyders asking if they would consider putting it together. The Snyders put together an unfinished black-and-white version and screened it for execs which ended up receiving a great response. Although it was almost derailed due to the pandemic.
The movie is set to release in 2021, which is giving the Snyders time to rally together the original crew to work on the score, visual effects, and final cut.
“Thanks to the efforts of a lot people, we’re excited to bring fans this highly anticipated version of Justice League,” Emmerich said in a press release. “This feels like the right time to share Zack’s story, and HBO Max is the perfect platform for it. We’re glad the creative planets aligned, allowing us to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut.”
No other details of the production have been made clear or a timeline but fans can anticipate the Snyder cut to release in 2021.
