- Park officials have asked LA county to allow them to reopen Universal Studios Hollywood in July.
As Universal Orlando is gearing up for its June 5 reopening, over on the west coast, president and chief operating officer of Universal Studios Hollywood Karen Irwin has asked the L.A. County Board of Supervisors this week to allow employees to return to work immediately to prepare for reopening. The parks are aiming for a mid-June and July 1 reopening date.
Irwin made the argument at a meeting of the county’s Economic Resiliency Task Force that theme parks shouldn’t be the last to open due to visitors spending most of their time outdoors.
“Theme parks actually offer a more controlled environment than beaches, gardens or hiking trails,” said Irwin at the meeting.
“We would like approval to begin the reopening process immediately in order to get our employees back to work,” she said. “L.A. County parks will be ready to begin reopening between mid-June and July 1.”
The theme park will mainly depend on local visitors as international travel is not expected to bounce back to its usual levels until 2023. Irwin argued that casinos in Las Vegas have opened, making the theme parks an option for local residents. CityWalk would be the first to reopen sometime in mid-June.
L.A. County is also home to Six Flags Magic Mountain and Pacific Park at the Santa Monica Pier.
Universal Orlando is reopening this week with phased reopening minimizing the number of people in the parks. Guests would have to wear face masks at all times and have their temperatures checked. CityWalk in Orlando reopened in mid-May.
Florida’s Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force approved Walt Disney World‘s and SeaWorld’s plan to reopen last week. SeaWorld will reopen on June 11. Walt Disney World will have phased reopening with Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom reopening first on July 11 and Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios on July 15. Disney will also require advanced reservations before visiting the parks. Disney Springs has reopened in late May with protocols in place.
Disneyland in Anaheim, CA has no reopening date as of yet.
