- Buckle in and make decisions for Kimmy Schmidt.
Netflix has been dipping its toes in creating interactive content with Black Mirror: Bandersnatch becoming one of its popular offerings. It may seem like an odd choice to make an interactive episode for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt but it makes sense since Kimmy never does what is expected.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend focuses on Kimmy, played by Ellie Kemper, trying to make it to her wedding to Frederick (Daniel Radcliffe) but first has to stop Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne (Jon Hamm) as he has taken more girls into a new bunker.
During the interactive special we see Kimmy’s usual hi-jinks along with series regulars as Titus (Tituss Burgess), Lillian (Carol Kane), and Jacqueline (Jane Krakowski) try to help her make things right.
It starts off letting you make the easy choices like choosing Kimmy’s wedding dress but as it continues, the choices start having more of an effect with how the episode turns out.
Pretty early on it will rewind the episode in the instance that you made the wrong decision, which seems that regardless of wanting to do it your own way, they have a narrative to follow. However, even if you let it decide on its own, it will sometimes still choose the wrong thing and rewind before the choice, in a way letting you see an extra scene you wouldn’t have.
The special was hilarious and had each character doing what they do best. There’s candy, karaoke, and even breaking the fourth wall. It does feel as though the special breezes by and you’re at the end before you know it. However, there is countless combinations that allows you to see different outcomes for endless Kimmy content.
