- As the pandemic sidelined live music, the live music industry, venues and artists have embraced drive-in theater concerts to keep fans safe during the pandemic.
Billboard charting Christian hip-hop artist TobyMac took on the road for a series of drive-in concerts after the novel coronavirus outbreak set his nationwide tour in a standstill.
The initial 12-city drive-in theater tour began on June 22 and has since added 5 more shows for August, as venue staff report large family turnouts and sold out venues serving up to 400 vehicles with up to 6 persons each car.
The tour saw the artists perform live in Tennessee, Missouri, Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, and South Carolina with safety measures in place for social distance. The newly added dates will allow fans in North Carolina, Florida, and Georgia to experience TobyMac with The Diversecity Band live.
TobyMac became the first in the Drive-In Theater Tour Series, produced and promoted by Awakening Events, to bring live music experiences to people in isolation due to the quarantine in place to help stop the spread of COVID-19.
“A few Saturday nights every summer my family and I head to a local drive-in movie theaters. We always love it,” said TobyMac. “When we started discussing live shows in this quarantine season and the idea of playing drive-ins came up… I said, let’s gooooo! It feels like summer, safe for everybody, and we all get to enjoy live music again. We ’bout to make some memories!”
Drive-in concerts have become the new reimagined live music trend across the country since the pandemic began. Artists joining the trend include Keith Urban, D-Nice, The Avett Brothers, Blake Shelton, Michael W. Smith, Steven Curtis Chapman and Mac Powell, The Chainsmokers, Nelly, and Brad Paisley headlining Live Nation’s Live from the Drive-In series. Live Nation has also expanded its concert spaces to leave personal room for tailgating, the size of a 2 car garage.
