- Former SNL star Leslie Jones will host the modern take on the 90's classic game show 'Supermarket Sweep' set to debut on ABC.
The fast-paced addictive series follows three teams of two as they put their pop culture knowledge and grocery shopping skills to the ultimate test in order to sweep the competition and take home cash prizes of up to $100,000.
Jones is a big fan of the original 90’s classic series and first approached Fremantle for the idea of the reboot until ABC decided to bring the iconic game show back to life.
“My main goal is to update it, bring some new music to it, bring some color to it, make people feel what I felt when I watched the whole show. You want everyone at home feelin’ that element of excitement,” Jones said during an ABC virtual press conference.
The original Supermarket Sweep hosted by Bill Malone aired on ABC from 1965 to 1967, and an updated version hosted by David Ruprecht was aired from 1990 to 1995 on Lifetime and PAX.
In addition to the reboot, Jones envisions a celebrity version of the show with the likes of Will Smith, Seth Rogen and Jennifer Lopez as participants. “Rihanna… she’d run in heels and win,” she said. “This show’s got to happen.”
The show was produced with COVID-19 safety measures in place. “We cleaned that store like crazy in between every round. The only people who were allowed to not have masks were Leslie and the contestants,” said executive producer Alycia Rossiter during the press conference. “We felt safe and joyful. We want it to be received with fun and joy. The grocery workers have kept us alive for the last six months and want to celebrate them.”
