- Salma Hayek, director Guillermo del Toro and more celebrities join to demand justice for Giovanni Lopez who was murdered by the police for not wearing a face mask.
In the midst of nationwide protests in the US demanding justice for George Floyd’s death by police brutality, Salma Hayek, director Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, Pan’s Labyrinth), and more celebrities are demanding the Mexican government for justice for Giovanni López, a 30-year-old construction worker from Ixtlahuacán, Jalisco that was murdered by the municipal police for not wearing a face covering.
According to witnesses and investigation reports, López was forcefully arrested, tortured, and murdered on May 4 by a group of ten police officers that arrived at Olivio Frantoio street around 9:30 p.m. The video posted on social media platforms sparked an outcry in the country. The family collected the body at the Guadalajara Civil Hospital and the autopsy confirmed López suffered a traumatic brain injury, left-leg shot wound, and traces of torture.
“We ask the Mexican government for JUSTICE for Giovanni and for all the people affected by the brutality and corruption of some members of the Mexican police. And I ask those responsible for public security to find in their hearts the strength, humanity, and honor to protect our people who are so in need of heroes and hope. Let’s change. #MeduelesMexico #justiciaparagiovanni”, Hayek wrote on her Instagram account paired with a photo where she wears a face mask with the words “Justicia Para Giovanni” in red letters.
“After more than a month there are no answers, there are no arrests. It is not abuse of authority; it is murder. The nonsense, the absolute madness, is that a murder occurs in the name of public health,” the film director wrote.
After a month of no action by the government, protests have ignited in Mexico, as it ignited in the US for George Floyd.
Mexican Actor, writer and producer Eugenio Derbez (Dora and the Lost City of Gold, Overboard, How to Be a Latin Lover) also joined to demand justice for Giovanni.
Actor Gael García Bernal (Coco, Mozart in the Jungle, Y Tu Mamá También) also used his platform to voice justice for Giovanni.
Artist Becky G. also signed a petition to stop the abuse of power by the police and to serve justice for Giovanni.
Hobbs & Shaw actress and singer Eiza Gonzalez posted a story on her Instagram page to support her support.
Elite actress Danna Paola also shared the demand for justice for Giovanni.
Actor José Ron wrote ““ENOUGH !!! Enough of police abuse around the world! This happened here in Mexico. They arrest a man for not wearing a mask and return him dead! His body had traces of torture and a bullet in the leg! Hopefully you join and support as well as support what happens in other countries! And to you my people, YOU ARE NOT ALONE !!!! #JusticiaParaGiovanni ”
More artists and public figures are demanding #JusticiaParaGiovanni and adding support to stop police brutality.
