On July 23, 2010, the British boy band and global phenomenon One Direction was formed on The X Factor. On Wednesday, the band’s public relations company Simon Jones PR published a statement revealing the band’s plans on commemorating the ten-year milestone by debuting a brand new 1D anniversary website, a 10-year anniversary celebration video, and interactive playlists and activations across digital platforms especially curated for their fans.

The immersive and interactive ‘10 Years of One Direction’ website will launch on July 23rd, which charts the boy band’s history and hosts a library of music videos, artwork, TV performances, behind-the-scenes and never-before-seen content. Fans will have the opportunity to generate and share their own ‘mixtape’ playlist “which will be personalised according to how they’ve interacted with the site’s content and the eras they’ve spent the most time exploring. It will also allow fans to connect to Spotify or Apple Music, with the mixtape playlists being saved to their respective accounts,” the statement reads.

To add, a new 1D anniversary video will be released on July 23rd on YouTube, which “highlights of the band’s career, from forming on The X Factor to releasing their single ‘History’, including clips from music videos, performances and candid behind the scenes video content. And of course, the special relationship they have with their fans,” according to the company.

Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik will also honor the milestone by releasing reformatted EPs across streaming platforms, that include b-sides, rare songs, remixes, live recording and acoustic versions of tracks for fans to relive.

Simon Jones PR also reveals that “There will also be exciting activations across Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube and other platforms, including creating and updating One Direction playlists, whilst Amazon’s Alexa will be singing Happy Birthday to the band.”

In the past months, there were rumors regarding One Direction’s plans for the big anniversary, especially after Payne spoke with The Sun earlier this year on the upcoming milestone.

“We’ve got a ten-year anniversary coming up so we’ve all been speaking together a lot over the last few weeks, which has been really nice,” Payne told the publication at the time. “To hear a lot of people’s voices and seeing old content and different things that we haven’t seen for a long time or never seen before, it’s very interesting. At the moment I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say. There’s a number of different things that we are all working on to try and make happen and people are forwarding emails around. But more than anything it’s just been a real good time for us to connect together again.”

One Direction has earned accolades before going on hiatus in 2015 after Malik decided to leave the band. The band has sold over 200 million records worldwide, has accumulated over 21 billion streams across all streaming platforms to date, and has managed to release a number of Top 10 hits, such as “What Makes You Beautiful,” “Story of My Life,” “Best Song Ever,” and “One Thing.” Today, each of the band’s members have launched their solo careers yet still remain grateful to their fans even after ten years.
