In a small desert city in west Texas, Miranda Lambert and longtime collaborators and close friends Jack Ingram and Jon Randall scored the majestic wilderness of Marfa with a pair of microphones, a single acoustic guitar, and open conversations about life, friendship, and human connection. Those few days and nights in November among friends brought forth a fifteen-track collection named The Marfa Tapes that is set to release on May 7 via Vanner Records/RCA Nashville.
“I’ll never forget pulling into Marfa that first night at 4 am,” said Lambert in a press statement. “The stars were like nothing I’d ever seen before, just this endless blanket hanging so low you could reach up and touch them. I immediately understood why this place was so special.”
Randall adds that there was really “nothing to do out there but pour a cocktail, sit around the campfire, and talk. Eventually, that just inevitably leads to songs. There’s no pressure to write, but most of the time, the three of us can’t seem to help ourselves.”
The Marfa Tapes features the newly released single “In His Arms,” the first preview of the collection soon to arrive, along with unplugged versions of Lambert’s previous songwriting collaborations on “Tin Man” from her 2016 album The Weight of These Wings and “Tequila Does” from her 2020 release Wildcard.
“There’s something singular that happens in that moment of collaboration and creation, something you can never really recreate in the studio,” said Ingram. “Our hope with this album was to share a little bit of that magic with people.”
