Tokyo-based creative collective millennium parade have shared the music video for “Trepanation” off the group’s recently-released debut album, THE MILLENNIUM PARADE. The track is an electronic-pop vibe featuring Japanese vocalist Friday Night Plans.
The animated video is rich in concept and poetic in delivery. The group’s visually creative members crafted a profound story of a half-built android girl activated on a post-apocalyptic Earth where humanity has completely vanished. The video takes us on her journey through the hierarchy of consciousness. As updates to her programming bring her to a state of enlightenment, she continues reaching for a butterfly which symbolizes the human soul itself.
Band leader Daiki Tsuneta shared, “I wanted to create something edgy and modern, and I think ‘Trepanation’ is the most stylish song I’ve created thus far. More than anything, I’m excited to see the latest stage of rebellious animator Ryoji Yamada’s work. I hope you enjoy the trip!”
“Trepanation” was also selected to be the theme song for the live-action film adaptation of Hideo Yamamoto’s psychological horror manga Homunculus directed by Takashi Shimizu (Ju-On/The Grudge). Homunculus released in Japan for a limited time on April 2, 2021, and is now available for streaming worldwide exclusively on Netflix.
