- Former First Lady Michelle Obama will launch her first and exclusive podcast on Spotify July 29, in efforts to inspire and change the conversation.
Best-selling author and former First Lady Michelle Obama is launching her own exclusive and high-profile podcast on Spotify. The podcast strives to change the conversation through interviews with Obama’s friends and family, celebrities, and political figures.
The Michelle Obama Podcast is the first product to release on the platform under its partnership with Spotify, who landed the exclusive rights on the podcast deal with Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company Higher Ground in early 2019. The podcast is set to launch on Spotify on July 29.
“My hope is that this series can be a place to explore meaningful topics together and sort through so many of the questions we’re all trying to answer in our own lives,” Mrs. Obama said in a statement. “Perhaps most of all, I hope this podcast will help listeners open up new conversations — and hard conversations — with the people who matter most to them. That’s how we can build more understanding and empathy for one another.”
The first series of the podcast will deal with the topic of vulnerability featuring special guests that include former Obama White House advisor Valerie Jarrett, late-night host Conan O’Brien, Washington Post columnist Michele Norris, and obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Sharon Malone. Michelle Obama’s brother Craig Robinson and mother Marian Robinson will also have a special guest appearance on the podcast.
“We’ve always believed in the value of entertaining, thought-provoking conversation,” Barack Obama said in a press release when the exclusive deal with Spotify was announced. “It helps us build connections with each other and open ourselves up to new ideas. We’re excited about Higher Ground Audio because podcasts offer an extraordinary opportunity to foster productive dialogue, make people smile and make people think, and, hopefully, bring us all a little closer together.”
Higher Ground is also under a multiyear partnership with Netflix, which recently produced Becoming, a documentary based on the former First Lady’s memoire, and Crip Camp for the streamer.
“President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama are two of the world’s most important voices, and it is a privilege to be working with them to identify and share stories that will inspire our global audience, which looks to Spotify for unique, breakthrough content,” said Spotify’s chief content officer, Dawn Ostroff.
