- Lin-Manuel Miranda, Gloria Estefan, and Melissa Fumero join the ‘One Day at a Time’ animated special on June 16.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, Gloria Estefan, and Melissa Fumero are joining One Day at a Time‘s animated special at Pop TV. The episode will air on June 16.
Miranda will make his debut on the show. Miranda was a big supporter of the show moving to a new network after Netflix canceled it. Estefan and Fumero will be reprising their previous roles as Tia Mirtha and Estrellita respectively.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic causing production to stop, the decision to produce an animated episode became a way to continue the show. The episode, titled “The Politics Episode,” came together remotely.
The episode will center around Penelope’s (Justina Machado) conservative cousin Estrellita, Tia Mirtha, and Tio Juanito (Miranda) coming to visit. With the election looming, they won’t be able to avoid fighting over politics.
The idea for the episode came from executive producer and showrunner Gloria Calderón Kellett. Executive producer and co-owner of Smiley Guy Studios in Toronto, Jonas Diamond will oversee the animation.
One Day at a Time stars Machado, Rita Moreno, Stephen Tobolowsky, Todd Grinnell, India de Beaufort, Isabella Gomez, and Marcel Ruiz. Its produced by Act III Productions, Inc., Snowpants Prods. and GloNation. Norman Lear, Mike Royce, Calderón Kellett, and Brent Miller serve as executive producers.
The special episode will premiere on Pop TV after a marathon of the show.
