Leonardo DiCaprio, Barry Jenkins Collab on Netflix Film Adaptation of Congo’s ‘Virunga’ Docu

  • Leonardo DiCaprio and Barry Jenkins will adapt the 2014 Oscar-nominated documentary 'Virunga' to a full length feature film for Netflix.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Academy Award-winning director, producer and screenwriter Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk) are set to collaborate on the film adaptation of the Oscar-nominated documentary Virunga, an investigative journalism and nature piece on the true story of a group of courageous people that risked their lives to protect the last mountain gorillas and build a better future in the forgotten part of Africa in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Jenkins will serve as the scenarist, and DiCaprio will be producing the Netflix film along with executive producer Orlando von Einsiedel, who wrote and directed the original award-winning documentary in 2014. Jennifer Davisson and Phillip Watson for Appian Way and Joanna Natasegara for Violet Films will also produce the film adaptation. Netflix acquired the rights to Virunga in 2014.
