Jon M. Chu has signed on to direct the film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Wicked. Chu replaces Stephen Daldry who exited the project in October 2020 due to production changes that did not work with his previous commitments.
No stranger to musical projects, the Crazy Rich Asians director also helmed Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights which is set to debut this year.
Wicked is based on the Stephen Schwartz musical, which is an alternative telling of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and L. Frank Baum’s classic 1900 story of the same name, told from the perspective of the witches. Screenwriter Winnie Holsman and composer Schwarz are adapting the musical for the screen. Marc Platt is producing.
Wicked has been plagued by delays and was originally set to release in December 2021 but with the COVID-19 pandemic throwing in another problem, it has been pushed back with no new date.
Chu recently stepped down from directing Disney+’s new series, Willow. He is represented by UTA, Artists First Inc and Goodman, Genow.
