- The iconic novel 'Harriet the Spy' will be adapted in over a decade to television in its first animated series ordered by Apple, starring Beanie Feldstein as the voice of Harriet M. Welsch.
Apple TV+ has announced a series order for the first animated adaptation of the iconic novel Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh. The adaptation is in partnership with The Jim Henson Company and Rehab Entertainment and is set to join the streamer’s Emmy Award-winning slate of premium originals for kids.
True to the book published in 1964, the series is set in 1960s New York and follows Harriet M. Welsch, an irrepressible, fiercely independent, adventurous and curious 11-year-old. Harriet wants to be a writer more than anything, and in order to be a good writer she needs to know everything, and to know everything she must become a spy.
Harriet will be voiced by Golden Globe and SAG Award nominee Beanie Feldstein. Emmy Award-winner Jane Lynch (Glee) is giving voice to Harriet’s larger-than-life, no-nonsense nanny Ole Golly. Mean Girls’ Lacey Chabert will also lend her talent to voice Marion Hawthorne, the ringleader of a group of smug, popular girls at Harriet’s school.
The classic novel was previously adapted to film by Nickelodeon in the ‘90s starring Michelle Trachtenberg as Harriet and Rosie O’Donnell as Ole Golly, and later Disney Channel aired the latest film adaptation titled Harriet the Spy: Blog Wars in 2010, set in Harriet’s teen years.
The animated series will be written and executive produced by Will McRobb, co-creator of the award-winning Nickelodeon series The Adventures of Pete & Pete. Film producer Sidney Clifton (Black Panther and Me, Eloise) will be the producer of the beloved novel adaptation in over a decade. Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford will executive produce on behalf of The Jim Henson Company, and John W. Hyde and Terissa Kelton will executive produce for Rehab Entertainment. Titmouse Animation Studios will animate the Apple Original series. Wendy Moss-Klein and Nancy Steingard of 2 Friends Entertainment will be serving as executive producers.
