'Hamilton' Dazzles TV Screens: Movie Review

The filmed version of the original Broadway production of Hamilton has finally made its way to Disney+ to delight theater and historical fans everywhere.

The movie is the full musical, even with an intermission included, as audiences in the theater would see it. Recorded in July 2016, the main original Broadway cast appears in their roles including Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson; Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler; Jonathan Groff as King George; Christopher Jackson as George Washington; Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds; Lin-Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton; Leslie Odom, Jr. as Aaron Burr; Okieriete Onaodowan as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison; Anthony Ramos as John Laurens/Philip Hamilton; and Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton.

The film is a treat. The actors sing live making it more than just a music video. Seeing the actors’ expressions adds to the story and gives a better understanding of the story. Odom gives a phenomenal performance as Aaron Burr and leads the musical. Jackson belting out “One Last Time” was moving. Diggs and Ramos were standouts while the three Schuyler sisters Goldsberry, Cephas Jones, and Soo are a delight to see.

Besides some minor lighting issues in some scenes and some minor sound mixing issues, it was a flawless performance captured on film. Miranda’s work shines and gives the same emotional experience as if you’re watching. It’s a remarkable work of art that now people can watch in the comfort of their homes and still feel the excitement and sing along.

Hamilton came out at the right time where we needed some escapism and it surely reignited the phenomenon.
