Following the premiere and box office success of The Box, starring EXO’s Chanyeol and Jo Dal Hwan, the film’s groundbreaking original motion picture soundtrack has now become a charting success and a one-of-a-kind masterpiece scored in music history.
Complete with an 18-track collection of songs featured in the trailblazing musical film, The Box’s highly awaited OST was released digitally on March 25 via Studio Take. Upon its release, the album made its debut at No. 4 on the Worldwide iTunes Album Chart and peaked at No. 12 on iTunes’ Top Albums chart in the US. The music catalog was hand-picked to befit the narrative of each character and engulf listeners in an array of emotions through songs from big-name artists like Billie Eilish, Coldplay, Chet Baker, Mariah Carey, Pharrell Williams, Louis Armstrong, among others. The album includes “Break Your Box,” a song written by Chanyeol as the breakthrough anthem for his character, Ji Hoon.

Besting the 21-day box office streak of the Academy Award-nominated picture Minari, the low budget but high-quality film The Box has swiftly become one of this year’s major blockbusters as it becomes the No. 1 movie in its native South Korea since its premiere on March 24. Directed by Yang Jung Woong, The Box is a music-based movie between Ji Hoon (Chanyeol), a talented musician who can sing only with a box, and Min Soo (Jo Dal Hwan), a producer who was at top of his game and encounters Ji Hoon. Together, they embark on a musical journey, busking across the remarkable cities of Korea and discovering their true potential.
For the multifaceted artist and actor Chanyeol, The Box marks his first lead role in a Korean film. He not only actively participating in the music selection and arrangements featured in the film but was committed to demonstrating his versatility and range of artistry through a diverse tracklist that includes the trot genre. While enjoying the perks of being a part of the first and only Korean motion picture to be allowed to rearrange songs by Coldplay, Chanyeol helped fashion the iconic track “A Sky Full of Stars” to fit his inimitably unique voice and style.
With The Box, Yang Jung Woong marks his directional debut. The picture also marks Eco Bridge’s first movie as a musical director.
