- Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor will pen the script for the upcoming picture with Reese Witherspoon reprising her role as Elle Woods.
MGM Studios has confirmed the long-awaited theatrical release date for Legally Blonde 3 set to premiere May 2022.
The news follows after an emotional Legally Blonde cast reunion held on Tuesday night in benefit of World Central Kitchen.
Hosted by the iconic Reese Witherspoon, the virtual reunion was joined by Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Jessica Cauffiel, Jennifer Coolidge, Matthew Davis, Ali Larter, Holland Taylor, and Alanna Ubach. The stars discussed the lasting impact of the cult-classic comedy after twenty years of the film’s production.
“People always ask me to do the bend and snap,” Witherspoon mentioned. “That was a full musical sequence that we ended up cutting out of the movie, it just felt odd because there was only one musical sequence.”
In May, Mindy Kaling (Never Have I Ever, The Mindy Show) and Dan Goor (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Parks and Recreation) were hired to script the upcoming third installment of the Legally Blonde franchise with Reese Witherspoon reprising her role as Elle Woods.
The threequel is being produced by Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine media brand, whose mission is to set and celebrate women at the center of every story together with Marc Platt and Adam Siegel of Platt Productions, and the head of film and television of Hello Sunshine, Lauren Neustadter.
“This was my college. This is where I went to college. I didn’t finish college but I finished Legally Blonde,” Witherspoon shared with her costars. “We all worked together and made this movie together that has inspired so many young people. It’s just such a gift…. Every time people come up to me and tell me they love this movie, I give it all to you, I share it all with you all.”
