Tony, Emmy, and Grammy award-winning actress and double Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo marked her birthday by honoring the legendary Queen of Soul and unveiling exclusive key art for National Geographic‘s highly anticipated series GENIUS: ARETHA.
Erivo is set to star as Aretha Franklin in the upcoming third season of the Emmy award-winning global anthology series. This eight-part installation will explore Aretha Franklin’s musical genius and incomparable career, as well as the immeasurable impact and lasting influence she has had on music and culture around the world. Emmy-winning Courtney B. Vance joins Erivo in the limited series alongside David Cross, and Grammy Award-winning musician and actor Tip “T.I.” Harris, among others.
The series is produced by 20th Television and Imagine Entertainment in partnership with Warner Music Entertainment for this third season. Imagine’s Academy Award-winners Brian Grazer and Ron Howard will return to executive produce the series alongside Francie Calfo, Ken Biller, Gigi Pritzker and Rachel Shane for MWM Studios, and Sam Sokolow. Pulitzer Prize recipient, MacArthur “Genius” grant receiver, and Tony Award-winner Suzan-Lori Parks will serve as showrunner, lead writer, and executive producer. Emmy, Golden Globe, and BAFTA TV Award winner Anthony Hemingway serves as director and will exec. produce. Legendary hit record producer Clive Davis and Atlantic Records Chairman and CEO Craig Kallman will also executive produce, along with Imagine’s Anna Culp as co-executive producer and producer Peter Afterman.
GENIUS: ARETHA will premiere on National Geographic this March.
