Adult Swim held its own panel à la Comic-Con@Home on Twitch over the weekend to share a first look at the upcoming fifth season of Rick and Morty and released a surprise Japanese-Language anime short Rick and Morty vs. Genocider.
The panel was led by co-creator Dan Harmon joined by stars Sarah Chalke (Beth), Chris Parnell (Jerry), and Spencer Grammer (Summer) over Zoom to talk about the growth of the characters and Mr. Nimbus, Rick’s new nemesis. The fifth season of the irreverent sci-fi comedy still has no premiere date, however, Harmon stated that the season finale was the last to complete from an animation perspective and the writers were already underway on season six.
To further satisfy the want for more Rick and Morty content, Adult Swim released a new anime short entirely in Japanese directed by Takashi Sano and titled Rick and Morty vs. Genocider. The mini episode sees Morty, voiced by Keisuke Chiba, adventure to Tokyo to find Grandpa Rick, voiced by Youhei Tadano, and try to stop the Genocider after Ricks and Morties are attacked across a multiverse. Everything weird happens in this strangely tear-jerking and complex short.
The animated short was produced by Sola Entertainment and animated by Telecom Animation, the same studio that produced 1988’s Akira.
